Creepy #1 in the new Previews!!!

So, I wrote a story in the new Creepy relaunch that Dark Horse is doing and it is now available in this month's Previews!

I'm really excited about this one. It's the first comic I've written that I was a fan of growing up. It's also the first work I've done for Dark Horse.

Here's the solicitation copy

What's black and white and clawing its way onto your reading list? It's the newly resurrected Creepy, of course! Now, don't fret, my putrid pets -- these new terror tales are cut from the same cursed cloth as the outlandish originals, telling contemporary horror stories with gorgeously ghoulish art from a lineup that'll make you lose your head! Original Creepy artist Angelo Torres teams up with devilish Dan Braun on "Hell Hound Blues"; Michael Woods and artist Saskia Gutekunst serve up a dose of "Chemical 13"; Neil Kleid and Brian Churilla provide "All the Help You Need" at a weird weight-loss camp; and jaundiced Jason Shawn Alexander brings his phenomenal painting skills to Joe Harris's "The Curse"! Plus Bernie Wrightson, the return of "Loathsome Lore," and more. All this, plus one classic story from Uncle Creepy's dank dungeon, and you've got 48 freakish pages of terror to bring home to mummy!

Publication Date: July 15, 2009
Format: b&w, 48 pages
Price: $4.99
UPC: 7 61568 15862 5 00111

The book will be out this July (in time for San Diego) and it will be well worth your hard earned money. Please do check it out.

Creepy in July

So, Dark Horse announced the new Creepy anthology at NYCC this past weekend which I am a part of. I don't know how much more I can say than that right now, except that I feel honored to be a part of this and Shawna is hands down the best editor I have ever worked with. I hope we work together again soon.

I'll talk about it some more before July. I'm really looking forward to this. I hope many of you are as well.

Michael Turner passed away

A couple hours ago, I read about the passing of comic artist Michael Turner. It was a bit shocking to say the least.

I got to spend a few hours with him once before a con. A couple friends came up to sign at a convention, and I ended up having breakfast with them and Mike before heading over to the exhibit hall. This was about the time when he was starting to blow up on Witchblade. I dunno, He was maybe eight issues in. Most people I've met in his circumstance (or even less successful circumstances) act like complete pompous asses. But he wasn't. He was very nice and down to earth. Not the least bit full of himself.

I remember reading about Mike's battle with cancer and his recovery. It left a pit in my stomach that someone so nice and young could face a thing like cancer. I remember later reading about his being sick again and immediately thought "He can beat it. He's a fighter. He did it once, he can do it again."

I hadn't read anything in a while and just assumed that he had.

Mike passed away yesterday at the age of thirty-seven.

I can't say we were friends or that we spent any time together beyond that one day, but I was impressed with him as a person and I'm really sad that he isn't with us any longer.

The original script

Iron Man

IMDB page
Trailer

Iron Man is yet another comic adaptation in a long line of big budget features to hit in the past few years. This one, however, stands out as one of the good ones.

Director Jon Favreau has quickly become more and more skilled as a director over the course of just four feature films at the helm. Though not perfect, it was quite a brilliant adaptation, from direction to casting to script (which just smacked of Favreau, though he did not receive a credit). I think he will do even better with Iron Man 2 (This weekend should cement the chances of a sequel).

Robert Downey Jr. plays lead Tony Stark. I do remember when first hearing the news...well, to say I was skeptical would be kind. But, seeing the footage at ComiCon last year quickly convinced me he was the perfect choice. What an impeccable acting job. He more than captured the character. He brought him to life and gave him depth lacking from the comic. I would very much like to see how this character evolves over future films (I'm really hopeful for a second and third film).

I was not a fan of everyone's portrayal of their characters (which may fall also on the script). But, I don't think anyone did a horrible job either.

The script was well written. Their was plenty of action and humor to balance things. It moved at a quick pace that made the film feel shorter than it's two-hour-plus running time. The ending was pretty typical, I thought. I'm not sure what could have been done differently, but it didn't blow me away.

A friend suggested the villains both having excessively large rings that they continued to play with suggested a connection to the Mandarin. I dismissed it, but their could be something there, I suppose. He is a logical choice for a villain in a future film, and it would serve as some smart and subtle groundwork for that villain. I'm not convinced, but I like the idea.

Effects were handled by Stan Winston Studios and ILM, with the former working more on the practical effects and the latter on the digital stuff. I think both companies did great work on this film and did a great job working together to make the transitions seamless.

I really hope they pack the eventual DVD with tons of special features. I'd love to see as much about how they put this thing together as possible.

All in all, a fantastic film. It reminded me of adventure films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, which has been sorely missing from theaters.

This is one that you should definitely see on the big screen.

PopGun in November

Well, my next published work will be a shot story called Rocket Racers in the pages of PopGun. The new anthology coming this november from Image Comics.

The book looks fantastic. Well over 400 pages of pure comic goodness from some amazingly talented people. This new annual anthology is a must buy. But don't take my word for it. Get a look at the official website.

You can order the book now through your local comic book retailer (Previews order code is SEP07 1958) or order it at Amazon now.

In the UK

PopGun is a monster with a $29.99 cover price. A bargain given the size of the thing.

Give it a look.

In Search of Steve Ditko

This brilliant little documentary on comic creator Steve Ditko was pointed out to me by someone on a messageboard I frequent. It's not the greatest documentary on comics I've ever seen, but it is fun and treats the medium with the reverence it deserves.

My Summer Movie Wish List

It's looking like a huge year for movies. Some amazing films (300, Zodiac, Grindhouse, the Host, etc) and some disappointing films (cough cough spiderman3 cough). But the year isn't even half over and the studios have only just begun releasing their summer tentpoles. Here are the films I'm looking forward to most this summer.

Pirates of the Carribean 3

Knocked Up

Day Watch

Ratatouille

Transformers

Harry Potter 5

Stardust

Superbad

Halloween

What films are you guys looking forward to this summer?
